How to Get DJs to Listen to Your Music -DJ Crazy

JAWAR: DJ Crazy, what are some of the best
ways for indie artist to professionally approach
you about listening and possibly playing their
song?

DJ Crazy Dave McMillan: Making post, asking
people who read any of the stream to send me
stuff they are proud of. If want me to listen to your
music ask me personally. If you send mass promo
it goes into the pile of 1000's vs the other music
I want to get to.

If you're asking me some of the best ways to get
out there in general...

Get as many free accounts on music sites as you
can. If have the money pay for SoundCloud. Make
sure you read the terms of [service] and use; you
don't want those sites owning rights to your music.

Once you have content [music] online, use Google+
and FaceBook with one's own friends to share your
music. Stuff people like will get shared without you
doing a thing (viral) for it.

Personally, I've made two Google+ accounts, one
for personal and one for public use. I still act like
a human on both. I still make a point to listen and
share other peoples work when it's good on my
public accounts. I hope others will do the same.

One thing I mean about being human on your public
feed is to use it in the same way you do with your
private feed. You'll want to censor what you say a bit
and no drama. :-)

Youtube is your friend; personally I find a lot of music
through it. Most of the tracks I find don't have a good
music video and without a video I have less reason to
share it with friends. If your song has a video I give it all
my attention rather than being in the background while
I'm doing other stuff.

This summer I walked pass some young men handing
out their CD by donation. In the few minutes I talked
with them, they got 10 CD's out for a profit. (50cents a
press, they took in $2-$10 each).

You can take this one step farther, get some hot chicks
to go in to the clubs and hand the DJ's a CD and kiss.

The "Publishing vs. Publicity" workshop will provide insider knowledge on the most significant aspects of the music business. Attendees will also have the opportunity to direct their questions face-to-face with music professional and the workshop's creator, Peniece Le Gall, who has worked for all three PRO's over the last decade.

"I created this workshop to enlighten individuals who are interested in pursuing a professional career in music that there is a business side that comes along with making music and publishing is the vital aspect of longevity in the industry," says Le Gall. After several very productive meetings, we decided to form the Atlanta Hip Hop Involvement Collective(AHHIC), as the VEHICLE that would allow members of the Atlanta Hip Hop Community to GROW creatively, economically, politically, culturally, etc.

The last meeting was about three months; since then there have been several factors that have kept us from meeting again, however, NOW is the time to get RE-FOCUSED, let other community members know about what we're doing and continue to BUILD our community! Do not to get caught in the world of "the underground." Secretly, I think most people want their craft appreciated by the most amount of people possible. After all if you could have a choice of 1,000 people downloading your music and 1,000 people paying to see you perform vs. 1,000,000 people downloading your music and 1,000,000 people seeing you perform while on tour which would you choose? More than likely the latter (1,000,000+).

The goal is to make the best music you can make, have a burning desire, practical written plan and back that plan with daily execution. Brand, market, promote and publicize your craft to your target client (fan/consumer) in an effort to get them to be a part of your movement. Invest the least amount of money without sacrificing quality or integrity and maximize profits without compromising your personal interest or harming others. Find as many ways as possible to make money online and off. "Think globally and act locally" -Chuck D.

You'll learn how to stabilize your own music business even while others are scrambling and trying to figure it out. "WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?"

GOJAWAR.COM -I got involved in the music industry (business), because as a teenager when investing my own money into my craft I wanted to know how I could get back the money I invested and possibly make a profit. I remain in the music industry as a way of natural progression within the business. For instance, starting as a writer/artist to music producer, then music showcase and music conference organizer to that of a speaker, newspaper publisher which has brought me to author/book publisher, business consultant/coach and motivational speaker.

I enjoy music and the business behind it. Since, I am believing that great music and recording artist deserves the best chance as any other music for having commercial success I have made it a point to educate and motivate others so that their music may be heard by new and existing fans. This is my way of doing instead of complaining about the state of the industry or that of the mainstream media machine.

The conversation of first week sales/sells is almost a moot point given that most recording artist are independent (outside that of the major music label machine). What does become important for most recording artist and their team is the marketing and promotions of the artists brand and image. If I'm not mistaken KRS-ONE once said "promote your image; don't promote your record, records come and go and get collected." In this point I overstand that if one properly markets and promotes their image or brand then when it's time for a new record, single or song to be release one's core fan base will flock to support it because they for the most part know what their going to get. As a personal testament to this whenever I hear that Sade has a new release I buy it without question, because I've bought into her brand or image. I've yet to be disappointed.

GOJAWAR.COM - I think sales/sells are important because the music industry is a business and any business to stay afloat must generate enough sales to earn a profit to justify its' existence. Once sales don't meet expectations to cover business operating expenses and the monies invested for a particular project that business can not justify being in business for to long, it will be forced to shut down. This has happened, is happening and will continue to happen it's a natural part of the life cycle -growth, maturity and decline.

Additionally, we would be reminded that first week sales/sells are really only important to a release from a major label recording artist, as independent recording artist don't have the pressure from the food chain of shareholders of major corporations often breathing down their neck (expectations to sale/sell large quantities of music in the first week release). Now that's Industry Pimping!

You already know this one, but I have to get it out of the way. Most of the top on-air talent started as interns and paid their dues. This has helped to create a fraternity sort of process for the profession of on-air personality.

Given that the industry is changing you may be in great position to take advantage. Now commercial radio is moving toward greater syndication of popular personalities who may have never interned, but because of their "fame equity" -as coined by John F. Christmas Entertainment and Sports Attorney they are in a position to become an on-air personality.

Ok, I said all that to say I'd strongly suggest look into Internet and/or Satellite Radio. More markets will continue to be fragmented as people want very specific programing. Commercial radio doesn't have the bandwidth to fulfill those needs. In addition, Internet & Satellite Radio gives you global reach.

Start where you are and grow from there. You may start a podcast, live video stream or other internet radio station.

Everything has a Life Cycle of maturity, growth and decline. Music is a part of the everything therefore it too will continue to mature, grow and decline.

What we will hear is current sounds being forged with older ones to create new ones. New genres continue to be developed per the cycle I just mentioned. Part of the question of what will music sound like in the next decade is directly related (I'm assuming) to what commercial viability these new sounds or genres will have? I am believing that their will be extreme commercial viability for those musicians, recording artists, music producers/composers, singers and songwriters who carve a niche for themselves and give their niche (audience/listener/client) what they want, when they want, how they want it and at the price they want it.

Those people that have a burning desire, a practical written plan and execute that plan daily will most likely see a long and prosperous music career in the music business. Creative artist, musicians and songwriters, etc. that speak to the human existence do so in the vein of "What's Going On?" The lyrics are as much of a reflection of the time as the music (drum). As food, fuel and other consumer goods/services price points continue to rise globally faster than that of our incomes (revenue streams) and human suffering continues I think you'll have more genuine musicians, songwriters and artist who speak to that experience. Out of that you'll have more music that people can feel. People are searching for something more in life/existence and in music.

What I have stated may seem to be a bit off topic, but if we remember when Rap/Hip Hop Music started in New York it started because it spoke to the needs of people who were suffering and wanted to convey/relay "The Message." It started because people were searching for something more genuine that spoke to their experience. Rap/Hip Hop Music borrowed from the old sound of its day -Disco, Poetry/Spoken Word and others and forged a new sound. Will Hip Hop stay dry? Maybe it will depending on who you ask and their definition of Hip Hop.

Does radio really suck or are you just disgruntled about the music business?

Assuming when people say radio sucks they are speaking of traditional terrestrial commercial radio stations. With that being said the real reason why radio sucks is for a number of reasons including, but not limited to:

Artist often complain, but don't do anything about it.
Payola has, is and continues to be big business/money for a lot of people.
People often don't consider alternative outlets such as community, college, Internet & satellite radio.
People's voices are not heard because they are not organized. Either get with a organization to help you organize your voices are start your own. The Future of Music is a good place to start to join an existing voice.
Many of the artist who say radio sucks often don't have their own website.

While you're complaining that commercial radio will not play your music they're artist focusing on building their email list, performing live every chance they get and embracing internet radio by doing drops and interviews as though it was commercial radio. It's interesting how many responses are talking about how they wouldn't work for Diddy for free, yet Diddy and many others have worked in the music industry for free in order to learn the music business from the ground up, to build solid relationships and network with the top brass. Additionally, Diddy has a solid track record of several hits under his belt. He must have done something correct as this entire forum is dedicated to him and his brand of business.

It's always easier to criticize and critique when you haven't walked in that persons shoes. I invite everyone to achieve certain levels of success in their craft, profession and business and get others talking about you. The record business has changed forever. There's nothing wrong with the A&R's they're just as afraid to loose their jobs as anyone else. A&R's have had to adapt to the climate change in the music industry, just as everyone else. It's not merely about good music if it were you could stand on the corner and sing or rap your heart away and ask people to through money in the hat.

Within the current record label model A&R's within the urban music community have to seek what's hot. As an artist, music producer, singer, etc. it's your job to ensure that you have created the proper buzz. If one doesn't know how to do that it's time to learn and/or hire someone to do it for you. There's no one particular group to blame at this point.

Not to long ago I was working with a talented artist who had a really good package and money behind the project. Unfortunately, the project has been stalled due primarily because the artist didn't overstand the music business and wanted everything right now. It's a shame.

In the days of old, A&R's where charged with developing star talent to a point that the talent had much better odds of having a long, healthy music career. Dionne Ross hasn't put out a record in who knows how long, but we still know her, know her hits and hold her in a certain position as a musical icon. She was developed to that, it was no overnight success. Because of how she and many others where groomed she can still go on tour and eat, her music still get played and she may do things because she was developed in the same way a president is groomed to have a certain style and grace about themselves.

When did I start?

If I recall correctly I was first asked to speak at a high school in L.A. in 1992.

There are a number of stories and testimonies of how the information has helped people. Oh, I am reminded that as in life business in general and the music business in particular runs in cycles. In the music business you have to be a serious about self-promotion, especially when first starting out, after all it's your music career and your life. The music business has more than enough aspiring recording and performing artists, singers, songwriters, music producers, composers and business people. In order to rise to the occasion you must be proactive in self-promotion or you'll quickly get overlooked.

Continue to expand your creative imagination and you'll find your "acres of diamonds" were you are. With that being said you may want to attend independent film festivals and conferences as a way to meet and greet rising film makers. It may be a bit easier to get your music placed in a number of indie films vs. major film releases. You never know which one of those films will become a blockbuster success. Some of the major music conferences such as SXSW have a film component tied into it. Another option is to approach indie film makers on myspace. They have an entire section the same way artists and comedians do.

Any creative person should have outside management based on their own experience, their knowledge of business and their ability to multi-task.

As a songwriter you are your own music publisher. Typically, it may be best for you to hold out signing to a larger music publishing company until you get the type of offer you desire. However, remember to join either ASCAP, BMI or SESAC as a songwriter and music publisher.

No, matter what company you work with self-promotion should be part of your consistent plan. No, one will promote you better than you.

There's a new type of company that is emerging from the flames. This company is a media company that encompasses audio-visual experience. This company overstands the need to build solid-brands in niche markets. This new type of company then markets & promotes its' brand using many of the existing and emerging technologies to come for optimum exposure. Fans want more than merely music now they want a total experience. JAWAR RESPONSE -You'd need to define what a success story is to truly answer that question. However, I think anyone who is beginning to brand their business and themselves is seeing the beginning of a success story. Additionally, anyone who has generated at least one dollar or equivalent or higher in other currencies is a success story in the making. Last, someone who THINKS, PLANS, EXECUTES their goals and objectives and is seeing fruit from their work ethic is a success.

QUESTION - Where is the true opinions from the people in the industry. Half the time I dont think most of us even listen to each others music. If you look at everyones comments they are damn near the same... always ending in "Check out my Music".

JAWAR RESPONSE -While the people in the music industry opinions matter, it is the music supporter that matters most, because the music supporters are the one's that pay for music, shows, t-shirts, etc. If the music supporter enjoys your music and is willing to support your efforts by spending money with you then you have confirmation that you are on to a sound that may be marketable. Perhaps one's conversation should be more engaging than "check out my music." Yes, there's a regular pay scale/salary for songwriters, but this varies greatly from songwriter to songwriter. The regularity comes when you have set yourself up properly as a business entity, signed the proper legal documents/contracts and have a number of songs being used over and over again. When this happens you may feel confident knowing you'll receive music publishing royalty checks.

No, because of almost the same reason, but at a 180 degree perspective. Meaning the there's no regularity in income if you haven't set yourself up properly as a business entity, signed the proper legal documents/contracts and have a number of songs being used over and over again.

PS Said. If you guys watch Baldwin Hills, BWB, the guys who wrote "Damage" for DK, say that even though they wrote a hit song they still are in need of money. Although ASCAP and BMI have an open enrollment meaning you may join at any time, given you are not currently a member of any one of the organizations, you may join whenever you like -this is for writer membership.

SESAC is a bit different than ASCAP and BMI when it comes to becoming a member. They are exclusive meaning that you have to be tapped/selected before being accepted into their organization.

When becoming a publisher member you will select a company name and it will be checked through each of the organizations to ensure no one else is currently using the name. Once they have cleared your name you'll have an account set up. There may be a small annual membership fee to be a publisher. It may be something like $50 or $100 per pro. However, double check with each organization to be sure as I'm not 100% on this one.

How should you approach exclusive vs non-exclusive deals in the music business as a recording artists, music producer, composer or songwriter?

Assuming you are seeking radio airplay in the U.S. every songwriter and music producer/composer should register themselves as a member with one of the three pro's in the U.S. -ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. Additionally, every songwriter and music producer/composer should register as a music publisher with at least one of the three pro's in the U.S. While you may only be a writer member of one of the three pro's at a time you may be a publisher member of all three simultaneously.

If the artist didn't write their own lyrics, traditionally they wouldn't be due any performing rights royalties from radio airplay from ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. I say traditionally because there may be some super star recording artist that may negotiate receiving performing rights royalties from radio airplay from ASCAP, BMI or SESAC of the song they recorded. While this is probably rare it's possible given that a new music producer or songwriter is seeking to get a placement and have that placement adequately marketed and promoted as a single by the record (new media) label.

If the recording artist writes the lyrics they are performing they would receive the writers share of the performance royalties from radio airplay from ASCAP, BMI or SESAC.

It may be extremely difficult to get anyone who knows about the music business and music publishing who intends on investing significant marketing monies for radio promotions to buy a beat non-exclusively. Anyone who agrees to such an arrangement may be naive to the music business and will ultimately turn in to a headache down the line when they get the skinny. It is typically better to deal with people who know about the business, so that everyone is one the level, as this helps to ensure all parties remains happy when the money starts coming. When selling a track non-exclusively this would be leasing a beat or track and the terms of the agreement are to be decided by the parties involved.

A personal account of why music business contracts are needed.

Sometime ago I was invited to speak at a music conference. The conference was away from my home market and required that I either fly or drive. It was not terribly far, but far enough to warrant securing a hotel room, so I decided to drive.

In any event I discussed my request with the music conference organizer and they agreed to what I'd requested. Unfortunately, there were other provisions that hadn't been discussed verbally, but were said to have been emailed to me -I'm still checking :-). Honestly, I don't recall getting the correspondence concerning the other provisions as they may have deterred me from attending the event. There was never a written document (music business contract) clearly outlining the expectations of both parties.

After hearing what considerations/accommodations had been provided to other speakers I felt slighted. I contacted the music conference organizer and let them know how I felt in addition to giving constructive criticism about the conference. Feeling slighted was totally my fought as I should have requested more. Let me explain how this works contractually and why having music business contracts are needed. Additionally, I will explain what I consider to be as my mother has taught me "THE PROPER THANG TO DO!"

In this scenario we went through the process from conception to completion. Without question both parties then are protected and receive what is considered fair and equitable treatment contractually. Because of this experience my company has upgraded its' policy on having me speak at any event. It has been said over and over again that in business "you get what you negotiate not what you deserve."

Although I hadn't requested certain provisions "THE PROPER THANG TO DO" from the conference organizer's standpoint was to give equal accommodations to all of the speakers, especially the one's who had already demonstrated the value they brought to the conference. The value I'd shown prior to the event was by actively promoting the music conference online.

My goal was to provide you with first hand experience on how miscommunication and not having a music business contract in place may lead to misunderstandings. Everyone wants to be on the winning team in the music business. Typically, great music managers would have watched you for awhile before approaching you and/or the both of you would be at the same point in your careers and develop in the music business at the same time. The growth I'm speaking of is true of Chaka Zulu (music manager) & Luda and Jason Geter (music manager) & T.I. In both situations they sort of came up together in the music business. Sean Garrett is a rare breed of music producer, songwriter and recording artist, as he doesn't have a music manager as such or didn't a few years ago. However, Sean has the ability to be articulate, knows what he wants and typically gets it.

In both examples -the artist in your case -music producer would do all that you can to work with independent artist who might have a situation developing and/or a strong Internet, street, club or radio buzz.

If you have heat (hit music) it makes things a lot easier for you. The other thing is having a pleasing personality. This doesn't mean that you have to kiss *ss per se, but it does mean that people have to believe they can put you in the studio with Mariah, Whitney and Janet, etc. and you'll perform as a music business professional.

Many people have gotten placements by working in a particular recording studio and networking while there. There's no specific way, but then again there is. There's no specific way because it's not like educating yourself to become a C.P.A. or attorney where the process is clearly laid out. However, it's a specific way because of what was mentioned earlier about having hit music, a pleasing personality and building your own buzz. Through these efforts you'll see results, as long as you don't get out the game (music business).

When should you or someone retire from the music business? When are you to old to be rap artist in the music business? Who should decide when someone should retire from the music business?

Everything in existence has its' life cycle growth, maturity and decline. However, who is the next person to decide when someone should and should not retire is my concern. Had some been able to retire Clive Davis we may have never heard "Fallin" or any of the other hit songs Alicia Keys wrote and sung. -As far as the rapper who is 45 years old still rapping at local events who has never been signed by now one may know that being signed is not the end all be all, especially in todays music business climate. Perhaps the 45 year old rapper has built a local or regional fan base, enjoys what he/she does, sells products and merchandise and is happy doing just that. Nope, they shouldn't retire from that.

Come on now retirement is a direct reflection of age be it 25, 35, 45 or 65. You just set the stage for age in your example by stating that a rapper who is 45 years old...

My response to when should a person retire is when they are ready to. I don't think the next person has a right to ask such a question unless they are asking for personal guidance in that case the question may be asked when should I retire.

If one never achieved a certain level of career success what are they retiring from? In the example of a 45 year old rapper who didn't get signed I liken that to someone who has been turning in job applications, but never got the job how can they retire if they never got the job? However, if the person is independent and doing their thing then they may ask themselves when should they retire?

It's by all means best to work for the experience and connections you'll make along the way. However, every living organism has a belly that needs to be feed to sustain life for any extended period of time. In your youth the thought is that you have more energy and hustle than you know what to do with, so this is the time to work for experiences and connections. The goal is that as you become seasoned (veteran) -if you will you should have gained enough wisdom, information, connections and resources to warrant others wanting and NEEDING to pay you for your expertise.

As your experience increases you'll begin to have a knowledge on when others should begin offering and/or you should begin requesting money. It may go something like this. Hey, JaWar, we would like for you to speak on Dec 20, 2008 at our conference. I'd reply that's great, but with rising fuel and food cost I want be able to make this trip, because I've exhausted all of my financial (marketing) resources for the year. No, problem JaWar we will pay for your plane ticket, hotel and ground accommodations. Additionally, we will give you a food stipend of $75/day and pay you your normal speaking fee. We'll also give you a table to sign and sell your books during the conference. JaWar, would you be needing anything else?

The example above is one demonstration of how by me investing my own time, energy and financial resources to consult and speak at conferences over the years has turned into paid motivational speaking situations. Along the way I have had this job here and this job there, some paying a little and some paying a considerable amount.

Work whenever possible should not be a job (just over broke), but a career move that puts and/or keeps you on the path. Assuming that you admire Jay-Z as a business man would you mind working for him for free? -Probably not. You'd probably event invest your own money to move to New York to ensure you were able to work for him to learn what he would have to share. In fact, it's safe to say you'd find a part time job, even if it meant working in a factory or Burger King (no disrespect mind you) to ensure you were able to work for Jigga Man to learn what he could share in the way of experience and connections.

Music Business - Is File Sharing Bad?

Below is a response given when asked about the music business and if file sharing was bad for the industry.

The scenario is self-perpetuating. One does all that they can to legally protect their intellectual property indeed. However, technology continues to move faster than the law. More importantly there are opportunities being missed by attempting to fight the end user/consumer/fan. Had it not been for bootleggers/illegal file-sharing there are a number of artist who would have never been able to create such a strong street buzz or build a solid fan base. Remember to have music business contracts on hand and access to music attorneys.

Again I point to a situation wherein their are positives to the bootlegging/illegal downloads at least one should attempt to find them. Major record (media) labels aren't investing the type of monies they use to on new releases and artist development. Illegal file-sharing as much as we may not like it is an alternative to mass-marketing music to potential fans without having to invest large sums of money. Think about it this way. As majors and major-indie labels sign more artist to 360 recording contracts there may come a time sooner than you think were the labels say hey "we have this great idea, why not give the music away as a lost leader and make money from all the other revenue streams." After all since they now participate in all the revenue streams it would make sense.

For the record some of the Music Industry Connection Books have been copied page for page and sold to other people without me receiving a dollar. However, some of those same people that got the bootleg version later bought the original, attended a music conference I spoke at and/or became a client that I consultant. No, I don't want people to copy my work and I not get compensated for it. However, there are positives that may come from it. Sometimes these positives come in a residual situation later on.

The legal (music business affairs) and marketing (music promotions, publicity and advertising) departments may always be at odds on bootleggers and illegal file sharing at major media and record companies.

At the end of the day the bootleggers and illegal file-sharers help to test the market for new music. In many cases they may help to explore new revenue streams for older music. Had it not been for rap music sampling in the older days it's safe to say that many of the older artists, songwriters, music producers and publishers catalog would not have increased in value the way that it did. In addition, the artist were able to tap two or three new generations of music fans.

Yes, illegal file sharing is bad on one hand, but consider the marketing and promotions that one gets on the other. One may fight against the consumer all they want or one may seek to benefit from them.

It's been said if you're not doing anything (making noise) no one would have anything to say. I wouldn't want people to illegally download the Music Industry Connection Ebooks. However, if they did it may be noting that the book may be read by someone who was interested in paying me to speak or purchase large quantities of books to be given away to other people. The absolute answer is that all sides, creative people, business entities making financial investments and music fans benefit from the relationship.

Recording and performing artist shouldn't pay their music managers on the front end for management services. Likewise the manager shouldn't be expected to pay one cent towards developing the artists career, paying to perform in music showcases and talent shows, etc. The roll of the music manager is to manage, possibly develop talent and the talents opportunities and resources.

With that being said the manager and artist will normally negotiate between 5% - 25% of either the gross (before taxes and expenses) or net (after taxes and expenses) revenue to be paid from the artists income to the music manager. It's always best to have a written music business contract between the music manager and recording artist.

The promotions side various depending on if the promoter is working a particular project in some instances they may be paid a set amount for the project for a certain period of time. In other situations the promoter may be paid a monthly retainer to execute certain marketing and promotional duties. The manager and promoter or two separate job descriptions that may overlap from time to time.

TRUTH TIME - If you don't have any money, get a job (9 to 5), make money online, save your money and cautiously invest it in marketing that will give you the highest return. Humbly, I suggest using the Internet by creating a website(s), blogs and a number of other social media profiles. It will be very difficult to get your name in the market place without commitment and money.

When the artist has the right attitude, constantly works to perfect their craft and performs every chance they get the right manager will find that artist. If no, manager is approaching you, you aren't creating the best music possible and performing that music frequently. When people like what they hear they will approach you. This isn't what most artist want to hear, yet this truth will allow you to know if you're ready to advance your career or go back to school and become a doctor, lawyer or accountant which are always in demand.

Staying in touch with fans is extremely important to an artist's long-term success. A well designed website and email list are great ways to stay in contact with new and existing fans. An artist's website should be used to inform fans of tour dates (i.e. live performances), autograph signings, release dates, merchandise for sale and t.v. and radio appearances. To ensure that this information is easily accessible you may want to put live performances, autograph signings and radio appearances on one page. In addition, this will make it easier for your supporters to support you at various venues.

Your supporters should come to know your website as the one stop shop for regularly updated details about your appearances and performances. For example, at the top of a page you may list dates, locations and event type in a row. Then you may create columns under each category (i.e. dates, locations and events) to list your scheduled events. In addition to being able to give people information about upcoming performances and CD release dates on your well designed website, you may also use your internet presence to increase your mailing list by allowing people to join your email list through your website.

To encourage people to join your mailing list, offer them something of value. This could be everything from a monthly ezine like The MIC (Music Industry Connection) to a discount on your CD or merchandise. The easier it is for people to subscribe to your email list the greater the likelihood that they will do it. For instance, allowing people to subscribe to your list on every page of your website is advantageous. No matter how many CDs you sell or how many performances you do, it is always the support of fans that help you maintain long-term success. Remember a well designed website and email list are great ways to stay in contact with new and existing fans.

ChiQ Diva originally from New Orleans had moved her operation after Hurricane Katrina and had been a staple in the Atlanta Music Scene ever since. On Dec. 25, 2010 she was called home and made her transitioned. She will be missed, but not forgotten by those who had an opportunity to know her professionally and personally.

She was instrumental in helping a number of recording artist get exposure on BET. Additionally, ChiQ Diva held a conference that educated the industry on the business of music and the inner workings of pr (public relations).

ChiQ Diva's networking skills allowed her to navigate from the bottom to the top and all parts in-between of business in general and the music industry in particular. She also had her hands in pr work for her clients who were writers, authors, actors and actresses and a number of other high profile public personalities.

The show honored those artists and producers who have made a significant impact over the past year and have contributed specifically to the development of the Independent Underground Music Arena.

We chose this type of event because there are several hundred Atlanta Hip-Hop Artists in the surrounding Georgia area that don’t get the respect that they deserve. The Underground Music Awards will combine the elements of an Awards Show and an entertainment showcase into one lively event.

The nominee does not reflect on sales or mainstream success of these artists. Artists will be evaluated on a 25-point scale based on: originality, longevity, lyricism, social impact, flavor, battle skills, consistency, charisma, poetic value, substance, versatility, vocal presence, live performance, flow and delivery, among other factors.

Atlanta Music Community Gives Back

Celebrities took on the Hot 107.9 Hot Shots December 15, at Adamsville Recreational Center for a worthy cause. Through freezing rain and slick streets, nearly 200 supporters attended the 2^ndAnnual Hoops4Food Celebrity Basketball Game to benefit the Pamela Mitchell Jones Foundation and the Blessings in the Sky Foundation.

The celebrity team consisted of singers Sammie, RL (Next), Daron (112), The Group 3D; producers Jazze Pha, Drumma Boy; rappers Princess (Crime Mob), Shawty Boy and several others. In addition to the game, the crowd of families enjoyed giveaways to include Hawks inflatables, candy, mini basketballs from Converse and t-shirts from Positive American Youth and Get Buckets Brand. There was also a spirited exhibition by the gymnastics troupe, Flip City South along with a dance and two vocal performances.

The gym walls were lined with representatives from the game's sneaker sponsor Converse, 790 The Zone, Hot 107.9 and the DJ's for the evening, Da Dre from Crunk for Christ Radio and Young Legendz.

Music Business- Business

Being a business owner you have to provide your own security and financial safety net. Unfortunately, many in the music business still view their activity as a hobby or gamble much like playing the lottery. Because you don't view your involvement in the industry as being in the music business you miss a number of opportunities to save and invest what money you make on your path to riches and fame.

As an example you'll want to have a business license, tax id and business checking account. In doing this you're able to separate your business money from your personal money allowing you to be a more legitimate business in the eyes of the corporate structure.

Additionally, by being a music business you're able to write off certain business expenses. Yes, paying to perform in a music or talent showcase and registering for a music conference may qualify as a business expense. Of course, you would be wise to consult with your certified public accountant (c.p.a) or other tax professional.

You're never to young to consider retirement. For sake of time and space let's say agree that retirement is as follows:

Your money is earning money, essentially working harder than you work for it.
You're able to live off the interest not the principal of your money.
You're generating so much revenue you're just now spending money you earned 10 years ago.
You have enough money being earned from royalties and rental income, you don't have to work.
You're able to live the life you've always envisioned for yourself without concern of paying bills.
You're able to give back ie do charitable and philanthropic work to help others get what they desire.

With all that being said read books, blogs and magazines that speak about setting yourself up for retirement and learn one phrase so that you know it like second nature- COMPOUNDING INTEREST!

Southeast Urban Music Conference -SUMC

ATLANTA, GA (September 16, 2010) -- The stage is set for the 8th Annual Southeast Urban Music Conference (SUMC) Major Music Showcase Thursday, September 23 at Park Tavern in Atlanta. The showcase will feature performances by up and coming and established artists.

SUMC Conference Chairman Tony Baraka said the event will also be the setting for the official announcement of the new date for the upcoming SUMC Conference and outline many of the new features that the conference has in store. Says Baraka, “When we announced the 8^th Annual SUMC, we immediately received tons of feedback from people requesting that certain features be added to the conference. So, in an effort to respond to those requests, we have decided to move the date of the conference and incorporate some new and exciting features that will be both entertaining and informative. We will announce the new dates at the SUMC Major Music Showcase & Marketing/Distribution Seminar on Thursday September 23^rd.”

One of the highlights of the event will be a performance by Living Proof Records recording artist Ebone. Baltimore-based Living Proof is one of the sponsoring labels for the showcase. “At SUMC we always try to find that next hot artist. Ebone is definitely that next hot artist. Her debut single, ‘Miss Your Love,’ is already getting spins at urban radio and we are looking forward to her performance on the 23^rd.”

Also performing will be Disturbing Tha Peace’s (Ludacris Label) BXC as well as 1803 Records’ Mr. Bigg Time who’s single “Maserati” is heating up the airwaves. Mr. Bigg Time has had prior success with his release “Check My Footwork” which was featured in the movie “ATL.”

The Sept. 23 event will also feature a marketing and distribution panel. Says Baraka, “We will cover a wide range of issues pertaining to marketing and distribution. According to Tess Taylor -Big Changes To The Copyright Act That Will Affect YOU!

Congress is quietly passing a significant change to the Copyright Act that will radically restructure copyright law and legalize the infringement of artists' rights.

Driven by commercial interests, the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act (named for the late AOL lobbyist) creates a safe harbor that will allow the use of songs, sound recordings, illustrations, music videos or any other copyright in any manner by anyone (whom the Shawn Bentley Act defines as an infringer) who is unable to find the copyright owner after a "reasonably diligent" search "in good faith." No requirements exist for a "reasonably diligent search" in the Act.
